CRISIS AND DEVELOPMENT IN ADOLESCENCE
THEORETICAL-CONCEPTUAL ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS IN VIGOTSKI

The hegemonic tendency in the psychology of adolescence is to link this period to a moment of crisis through the symptomatic and turbulent lens. The objective of this study is to systematize the concept of crisis in development for Vigotski, based on Volume IV of the Collected Works, in which the author explores higher psychological functions and personality in the adolescent. To this end, theoretical research was carried out, using as methodological strategy systematic readings and excerpting of the work, and, given the materialist-historical and dialectical method, which guided the research, we sought to establish what is essential for the conception of the category “crisis” in Vygotskian terms. Fundamentally, in the dialectical interpretation, the crisis emerges from the contradiction established in the reconfiguration of the social situation of development; however, the way in which this is established in the course of singular development—whether or not it will acquire turbulent characteristics—will depend on the historical-dialectical relation between external conditions and the internal need for a turning point in development.
