MEDICALIZATION OF THE PAIN OF EXISTENCE: CRITICAL REVIEW OF “HAPPILY EVER AFTER?”

Abstract

The present work consists of the Critical Review of the book Happily Ever After? An analysis of the effects of long-term use of antidepressants (2014), Kwame Yonatan's book, the result of his master's research developed between 2011 and 2013. It corresponds to guided interviews with five participants diagnosed with depression and using antidepressants for at least three years. The research aimed to question the effects of prolonged use of this medication; whether there is suffering underlying this use; and how such diagnoses are structured. For this, in addition to clinical and guided interviews, literature review and psychoanalytic theoretical support (Freud/Lacan) were used as scientific methodology. It was concluded that there is a tendency to categorize signs and symptoms through Diagnostic Manuals that support the use of medication as the only or main form of treatment. This fact is rectified in this work, based on the clinical debate of the cases interviewed.
