CONSTRUCTION AND VALIDATION OF THE GESTATIONAL ANXIETY SCALE

There is a scarcity of instruments to measure anxiety in the pregnant population; there are instruments that measure anxiety in the general population; however, when applied to pregnant women, they can result in false positives. The aim of this study was to present the development and validation of the Gestational Anxiety Scale (GAS). For its development, 20 items were created and then subjected to review by experts. For validation, Cronbach's Alpha tests and exploratory factor analysis were employed. The results indicated that two items from GAS should be removed, resulting in an instrument consisting of 18 items that were validated in two factors. The first factor was labeled as emotional tension with 11 items and a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.897, while the second factor was labeled as distress with 7 items and a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.843. The study demonstrated that GAS is a valid and highly reliable scale for use in the assessment of pregnant women.
