Freud elaborated the concept of narcissism and addressed narcissistic phenomena, mainly in the context of child mental development, melancholia and psychoses. Some post-Freudian psychoanalysts, including Otto Kernberg, continued the investigations and deepened the understanding of this phenomenon. The purpose of this article is to present the hypotheses about narcissism and narcissistic pathologies elaborated by this author. It includes, in the category of narcissistic pathologies, diverse phenomena, ranging from milder conditions, related to small misfits in terms of the conception of oneself and the investment of libido in the self and in objects, to more compromising narcissistic affections, which configure the personality disorders in question. In his theory, three levels of narcissism are differentiated: normal narcissism, pathological narcissism and narcissistic personality. In this last category, he highlights the Malignant narcissism syndrome, which consists of a more severe personality disorder.
