PARANOID DELUSION
PSYCHOANALYTIC NOTES ON “THE DOUBLE”, BY DOSTOYEVSKY

The construction of delusion in paranoia is investigated from the commentary on fragments of Dostoevsky's book “The Double”. In it, the Doppelgänger, a theme central to the understanding of the protagonist's delusional system, appears as an attempt to treat foreclosed (verworfen) contents that return in a disruptive way. Thus, the development of delusion represents as a shield against a radical experience of subjective annihilation, which erupts in situations in which the protagonist's difficulties in inserting himself in social bonds are evident. The article compares excerpts from Dostoevsky's book with the Freudian analysis of Schreber's autobiography, based on Lacan, Maleval, Rabinovicht, Soler and Quinet's considerations on the syntax of delusion. The concepts of compulsion to project, secretary of the alienated, closed discourse and self-referential interpretation are valued for the understanding of the main character's speeches, motivations, and actions.
