This is about the review of the book Autism policies: Effects on the child's place in the social imaginary. Its author, Leticia Vier Machado, shows that there is an excess of discursive circulation of the signifier “autism” in the social field. She highlights that the discursive practices that shape the field of autism carry childhood ideals and shape the contours of an ideal child, present in the social imagination. She points out that the political struggle for autism is marked by propositions that materialize at the level of public policies, thus indicating the place created and reserved today for children. The book invites us to take a certain “distance” from this discursive spraying around the diagnosis of autism that overlaps the child, so we can understand that the dominance of the way society relates to autism and autistic people amplifies the way we idealize and raise children
